Principal causes and models of earthquakes are described. Possible reasons (“trigger mechanism”) of tectonic movements are examined. Underlined in the paper is an importance of possible earthquake prediction, first of all, understanding of its nature. That will allow to estimate correctly the foreshocks and mechanisms of their appearance.
